The Big 10
The list includes familiar and impressive names, and it is also interesting to note the names of companies affiliated or owned by these ten big companies.
I first became aware of this information on a website called alternet.org. I dug a little deeper and learned that Business Insider .com published an article, in June of this year, titled, 10 Companies That Control Almost Everything We Eat, and written by Hayley Peterson.
Credit for the above graphic goes to a website called Oxfam.org, a site which raises money for, and awareness about, the poor of this world.
A report on their site titled, *“Behind the Brands,” provocatively states that “The world’s largest food and beverage companies have a lot of power – but you have more. And because they’re not using theirs enough to help poor communities or the planet, you can use yours to change the way they do business.“
Getting to the truth …
The Gluten Alarm is dedicated to uncovering the truth, and learning who-owns-what led to the decision to take a look at one of the larger companies making gluten free food. Udi’s seemed like an obvious place to start.
It turns out that “Udi’s recently sold it’s National Products division to Smart Balance (now Boulder Brands, NASDAQ:BDBD) for $125 million. At the time of the sale Udi’s Gluten Free and Granola was being sold in more than 20,000 stores in North America.”
Boulder Brands …
The next step was to learn about Boulder Brands, Inc. They operate through two segments: Natural and Smart Balance.
The “Natural segment consists of the company’s Glutino, Udi’s, Earth Balance, and EVOL branded products. The company has marketed Glutino and Gluten-Free Pantry products since its acquisition of Glutino Food Group (Glutino). Glutino offers a range of shelf stable and frozen gluten-free products, including…”
“The company, Boulder Brands,Inc, has marketed Udi’s products since its acquisition of Udi’s Healthy Foods, LLC (Udi’s). Udi’s markets gluten-free products under the ‘Udi’s Gluten Free Foods’ brand in the retail market and food service channels. Udi’s is a major brand in gluten-free bread and baked goods. In addition, Udi’s markets other gluten-free products, including frozen pizza and granola.”
Davies, also of Boulder Brands,Inc, markets various gluten free foods in the United Kingdom, primarily under the Udi’s brand.
Just a little trivia here and FYI …
As a part of the sale Udi’s agreed to rename/rebrand its remaining family owned, Colorado businesses, and their parent company is now called the “Baron Group.” They still have three brands, which have been changed to “Izzio Artisan Bakery,” “Etai’s Catering,” and “Silvi’s Kitchen.” All three businesses are located in Denver, Colorado.
The Good Guys!
As for “Boulder Brands,Inc,” they appear to stand for everything any of us could want in an US company. Their goal is “to be the most innovative and trusted health and wellness company in the world.” Their vision is “to change the way the world eats, one product and one solution at a time.” Their focus is “to build brands targeted at highly motivated consumer health needs, fueling growth through new channels, products and acquisitions.”
I have no idea how the 10 BIG COMPANIES THAT CONTROL OUR FOOD became who they are today, but I think you can see how companies do tend to change partners over time, and with each new principle comes new views. I wonder how many of us have even noticed that Udi’s was no longer who we thought they were? I sure didn’t …
What are we to do?
These are only a few of the reasons we must be proactive. There is no more relying on media, government, our professionals or anyone else to tell us what to do. We are the guardians of our selves and of our own families. We have got to look out for ourselves and for each other.
Until Next Time …
